General Conference and the Book of Mormon

General Conference and The Book of Mormon
Quotes by President Russell M. Nelson:Read the Talk

"Conversion is an individual matter. The Savior ministered to the Nephites one by one. Each individual receives a witness and testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”1

"Remember in the Sunday morning session of the April 2017 general conference, President Thomas S. Monson pleaded with “each of us to prayerfully study and ponder the Book of Mormon each day.”2

When President Nelson said this in October Conference 2017, my heart felt like it dropped to the floor. I hadn't remembered President Monson saying this. I didn't remember if I had reread the message AND if I had missed it for the second time. I always want to follow the prophets councel and I felt like I had been missing out on much needed blessings. It wasn't that I hadn't been reading scriptures, I had just been concentrating on reading the words of modern day prophets and apostles, and other scriptures.

So what do we miss in conference. In a Sunday School lesson I remember once the teacher relating a story of when someone from another faith had asked him, "So what are you doing because you have just listened to a prophet of the Lord, to improve your life." I thought that was a very strong question, and it made me think deep about what I do each time I listen to General Conference.

We are so lucky to pray, ask questions, and get answers at Conference.

"Since President Monson’s challenge six months ago, I have tried to follow his counsel. Among other things, I’ve made lists of what the Book of Mormon is, what it affirms, what it refutes, what it fulfills, what it clarifies, and what it reveals. Looking at the Book of Mormon through these lenses has been an insightful and inspiring exercise! I recommend it to each of you."

1. The Book of Mormon both illuminates the teachings of the Master and exposes the tactics of the adversary.7
2. The Book of Mormon teaches true doctrine to dispel false religious traditions.8
3. The Book of Mormon gives purpose to life.9
4. The Book of Mormon shatters the false beliefs that happiness can be found in wickedness10 and that individual goodness is all that is required to return to the presence of God.11
5. It abolishes forever the false concepts that revelation ended with the Bible and that the heavens are sealed today.
6.  When I think of the Book of Mormon, I think of the word power. The truths of the Book of Mormon have the power to heal, comfort, restore, succor, strengthen, console, and cheer our souls.

President Nelson Promices the following if you read the Book of Mormon:

1.  As you prayerfully study, you will make better decisions—every day.
2.  As you ponder what you study, the windows of heaven will open, and you will receive answers to your own questions and direction for your own life.
3.  I promise that as you daily immerse yourself in the Book of Mormon, you can be immunized against the evils of the day, even the gripping plague of pornography and other mind-numbing addictions.

In addition to this list, a copy of President Nelsons he made are at the end of his article at:

President Nelsons List

"We need to feel, deep in “the inmost part” of our hearts,12 that the Book of Mormon is unequivocally the word of God. We must feel it so deeply that we would never want to live even one day without it."

"I testify with my whole soul that in a most miraculous and singular way, the Book of Mormon teaches us of Jesus Christ and His gospel."

Since General Conference and a desire to follow the prophet of God, I started to reread the Book of Mormon. I still study the words of the Modern Day prophets and apostles, but the two combined together give me greater insight and inspiration, which builds my inner core and strengths me to be a better me from the inside out.

Joy in the Journal
Use the questions posed by the prophet to add meaning to your journal today. His questions are evocative and can help you dig deep. Answer at least one Question, but consider the others in your answer.

  • My brothers and sisters, how precious is the Book of Mormon to you?
  • If you were offered diamonds or rubies or the Book of Mormon, which would you choose?
  • Honestly, which is of greater worth to you?
The Three main questions to answer, that President Nelson would love us all to answer:
  • What would your life be like without the Book of Mormon?
  • What would you not know
  • What would you not have?
